Several months after my parents divorced, I was looking through an old copy of a book by John Steinbeck. An envelope fell out. I opened it and found a letter addressed to my father from Mr. Steinbeck, himself. My father had written to congratulate him on his winning of the Noble Prize for Literature. Mr. Steinbeck was kind enough to answer it. While just a brief thank you, it shows the warmth of a man who must have personally signed thousands of letter from well-wishers.

Cannery Row
Cannery Row

I had an aunt that lived in Monterey, California. Before the city tore down the Cannery Row of this book, she took me to see it. The stories in this book are based on real events, and that makes it even more enjoyable. By the way, the "Valley of the Heart's Delight" mentioned in many Steinbeck works is the Santa Clara Valley, the most fertile farm land in the world. Currently, most of it is paved to make room for Silicon Valley.
